Ferry County SAR Special Equipment

Search and rescue is a skill that involves thorough training, uncommon dedication, and special equipment. The Ferry County Search and Rescue team trains with our special SAR equipment on a regular basis. Some of the special equipment we use is listed here.

The Cascade Toboggan rescue litter is constructed of lightweight fiberglass and aluminum and is equipped with a large detachable mountain bike-type wheel with a drum-break. The wheel allows a minimum of two SAR team members the ability to transport a subject over almost any terrain.

With the wheel removed, the litter can be utilized in a traditional manner with four or more SAR team members transporting the subject to safety.

Snowshoes play an important role in winter rescues. In winter rescues, the ability to travel quickly through deep snow is critical to locate and rescue subjects. Survival in the winter often depends on quick response, expedient overland travel, and successfully extracting the subject. Snowshoes are equipment that makes that possible.

Effectively using two trekking poles reduces fatigue, increases travel speed, provides excellent stability, increases the distance that can be comfortably traveled in a day, and reduces accumulated stress on the feet, legs, knees and back.

Radio contact with the SAR Command Center, other SAR members, and the Dispatch Center is critical in the strategic coordination of a successful search and rescue.
